Families, workplaces, churches, neighborhoods, and communities are stronger when men are stable, responsible, present, and able to contribute.
But when a man falls into homelessness, addiction, isolation, or despair, getting back on his feet can be much harder than simply telling him to try harder.
See Why Helping Men Matters
A father can show up. A worker can contribute. A husband can help carry a family. A neighbor can serve. A man who once needed help can eventually become the person helping someone else.
Men are fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, pastors, coaches, tradesmen, mechanics, teachers, inventors, employees, volunteers, neighbors, and friends.
When men are healthy, responsible, and connected, the people around them can benefit too.
That is why helping a man recover is not simply an act of compassion for one person.
Restore a man, and the impact may eventually reach his children, his family, his workplace, his church, and the community around him.
Strength is expected.
Responsibility is expected.
Provision is expected.
And when a man falls, the message can quickly become, "Pick yourself up."
Sometimes that is exactly what he wants to do.
The problem is that wanting to rebuild and knowing how to rebuild are not the same thing.
A man struggling with homelessness or addiction may already feel ashamed that he is no longer doing the things he once believed a man should do.
That shame can make asking for help even harder.
It is easy to look at a man experiencing homelessness and think he should simply work harder, make better choices, or get himself together.
But rebuilding can become much more complicated when the foundation underneath him is gone.
Women facing danger deserve protection.
Children deserve safety, stability, and healthy adults around them.
And helping men become healthy, responsible, and dependable can strengthen those same families and communities.
Recovery often happens slowly, through hundreds of ordinary decisions repeated over time.
Safe housing, meals, rest, clean clothes, structure, and enough breathing room to think clearly again.
Addiction, pain, destructive habits, grief, and old choices have to be faced honestly.
Work, service, accountability, keeping commitments, and becoming someone others can count on.
A healthy man may eventually become the father, worker, volunteer, mentor, friend, or leader others need.
Not to rescue him.
Not to lecture him.
Not to treat him like a child.
But to work beside him.
Encourage him.
Expect something from him.
Pray with him.
And remind him that becoming a healthy man is still worth fighting for.
Several mornings each week, men from the community can come to Phoenix Dream Center and work alongside men in the Life Recovery Program.
At 7:00 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, there are opportunities to help with landscaping, chores, and practical work around campus.
