In 2008 we found this 13-year-old being trafficked on the streets of Phoenix
In 2008, something incredible happened that forever changed the lives of our Executive Director Brian Steele and his wife Skye Steele. They were doing inner-city outreach to at-risk youth in Phoenix when they stumbled upon a 13-year-old girl being trafficked on 51st Avenue. Can you imagine the shock and horror they must have felt? But instead of turning a blind eye and walking away, they took action.
Their hearts ached as they saw the pain and trauma this young girl had endured. But they didn’t give up on her. They got her the emergency medical help she needed, and then they scrambled to prepare a room for her at the Phoenix Dream Center. With open arms, they welcomed her into the Phoenix Dream Center and into their hearts.
That moment marked the beginning of a mission that Brian, Skye and the entire Dream Center team live every day – a mission to stop human trafficking. They have seen firsthand the horrors that young women are subjected to and they refuse to stay silent. They are passionate about recovering girls out of human trafficking and helping them heal once they are recovered.
But that’s not where the story ends. The girl they helped in 2008 has now graduated college and is happily married, and Brian and Skye are still in contact with her. That single act of kindness and compassion changed not just her life, but the lives of countless other young women who have since come through the Phoenix Dream Center’s human trafficking recovery program.
Since its opening, the program has served over 2,300 girls and young women, most of whom were between the ages of 13 and 26 years old. Each one of those young women has a story – a story of pain, trauma, and survival.

This is a picture that a volunteer took just after we gave this girl a rose and told her they had somewhere for her to go to be safe and to get help.

STORIES OF LIVES BEING CHANGED
It’s horrifying to think, but Kelle was trafficked by her mother when she was only 6 years old.
The abuse from my childhood affected me for a long time. I made terrible choices and ended up with a guy who began to traffick me, just like my mother. The Dream Center helped me to see a new future for myself and my baby. I'm so thankful for all that they've done to help me be a good mom and have a good life.

The single greatest need we see at this time is the need to help girls and young women in our programs reconnect to the community around them.
Traffickers keep survivors purposely isolated from the community. We desperately need to expand our fleet to help even more girls and young women reach community services.
Make a donation of any amount to a project happening now that will expand our fleet to help more girls.

In response to a large number of shelters and safe house programs that have stopped taking in victims of human trafficking due to COVID-19, the Phoenix Dream Center has decided to safely continue to serve trafficked individuals, without discrimination to their current health condition, so long as our advising medical professionals deem it is safe for our campus to provide those services.
For example, we believe that a young girl who is trapped in the violent, life threatening abuse of human trafficking who happens to have COVID-19 still deserves to be recovered and helped – and we are going to help her. We will provide her with safe housing including isolated services so that any illness she has does not affect other girls who are also healing. The medical professionals we work with at the Phoenix Dream Center have outlined a plan for us to be able to safely serve individuals with COVID-19 and we have decided to follow that plan.
We are a heavily volunteer driven organization and we need your help!

Human trafficking is an abhorrent crime that affects people in the United States every day. According to recent estimates from the International Labour Organization, there could be as many as 25 million victims of human trafficking worldwide, with hundreds of thousands of those victims being found in the United States alone.
Human trafficking, often referred to as modern-day slavery, involves the exploitation of people for labor or services. In the US, this typically includes people being forced into domestic work, agricultural or factory labor, or sex work against their will. The majority of these cases involve children and women who are lured by traffickers using false promises and/or threats of violence.
The most common form of human trafficking in the US is sex trafficking. This crime occurs when a person is forced or coerced into performing sexual acts against their will; they may also be sold between traffickers and exploited for commercial sex. Traffickers use social media and other outlets to advertise underage victims who are then sold for large sums of money. This not only harms individuals terribly but robs them of their dignity and freedom—and it must be stopped.
STOPPING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
In Arizona, 1 in 3 at-risk and homeless youth have been trafficked. And the average age that a child is first trafficked in Arizona is just 14-years-old (8th and 9th graders).
The stories of the girls in the human trafficking program are some of the most moving stories we’ve ever heard. Coming out of horrendous circumstances with completely broken lives, we are seeing young women's lives turned around in an almost miraculous fashion through the leading-edge programs.
M.C Donnelly, #1 NYT Bestselling Authors, Chicken Soup for the Soul
Since 2008 our human trafficking program has been committed to providing trauma-informed housing, behavioral health, medical health, education and career services to young women from all over the nation.
As of 2020 we’ve successfully served over 2,100 young women, mostly between the ages of 14 and 26 years old. With 48 beds for young women and 12 beds for young men, this program is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.
