Avi isn’t your typical teenager. Unless your typical teenager has already started a business that gives 100% of its proceeds to local charities.
“I just wanted to give back to a community that’s given to me,” says Avi Agarwal, an articulate 15-year-old who’s company, Avi’s Sweet Treats, was started in May in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
“So many families in my community have been affected by COVID-19; food insecurity is a very real issue for them. I started my company to use my baking skills to be able to support St. Mary’s Food Bank and help alleviate some of the need. It’s amazing to see what an impact I’m making. I toured St. Mary’s Food Bank and learned that $1 provides 7 meals to hungry families. That’s amazing! A little really can go a long way.”
Avi’s heart to help doesn’t just stop at St. Mary’s Food Bank, though. This past month, his company donated several dozen delicious cupcakes for a special Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Phoenix Dream Center.
“The cupcakes were phenomenal,” says Lisa Gonzalez, one of the Volunteer Coordinators for the Phoenix Dream Center.
“The motto of the Phoenix Dream Center is to ‘Find a need and fill it, find a hurt and heal it.’ It is truly inspirational to see someone like Avi willing to do his part to fill those needs and heal those hurts. ”
“It’s been the best experience to talk to people and realize how much of an impact just a little bit can make,” Avi commented. “Every person can make a difference.”
